Becks were constructing an addition to their home. When the framers tied a new wall to the existing house they had to cut out a corner of the roof. There was a halogen light on both corners of the roof to light the back yard. They cut off the entire unit and placed it in the attic, and neglected to inform the Becks, who continued to use the outside lights as usual. Either the light fell into the insulation or was placed too close to it. When it got hot it started to burn. The smoke detectors did not go off because all the smoke was in the attic at first. Luckily Teri and Randy were still up and discovered the fire. The roof over their bedroom collapsed on their bed. If they had been asleep the whole family might have died.
